Jessica Cruel appointed Editor in Chief of Allure

Condé Nast announced on Tuesday that Jessica Cruel has been appointed editor-in-chief of its beauty title, Allure. She takes over for Michelle Lee, who revealed in June that she was leaving the company and magazine for a position at Netflix.

Cruel joined Allure in 2019 as features director. She led The Melanin Edit, an Allure platform geared to Black women who are interested in beauty, health, and wellbeing. Cruel worked as the deputy beauty director at Refinery29 before joining Allure, and she has previously worked as an editor at Self, PopSugar, and New York magazine. Cruel most recently worked as content director for print, digital, and video channels, as well as the Allure Podcast, the Allure Beauty Box subscription program, and the Readers’ Choice Awards and Best of Beauty Awards franchises.

“I am so thrilled that Jessica is Allure’s new editor-in-chief,” the global editorial director of Vogue and chief content officer of Condé Nast, Anna Wintour, shared in a statement. “As a long-time beauty editor, working at Allure is a dream. It has always served as an unparalleled source of beauty journalism, as well as my personal mood board and shopping guide,” Cruel stated in a statement. “I am thrilled to shepherd Allure through the next chapter — one focused on making industry-wide impact, spotlighting the many communities that use beauty as a form of self-expression, and celebrating how these practices connect us all.”

Cruel will step into her new role on September 8th. Congratulations and we wish you all the best.
