Giambattista Valli Of The Dolls AW21

The category is tulle and Giambattista Valli is bringing it. Valli introduces a couture collection with a color palette suitable for a spring valentine: black, white, red and shades of pink. Almost every ensemble is overflowing with an abundance of tulle and ruffles to make a 1980s prom queen jealous. The runway also saw heavy use of feathers, bows and leaves. Each of the models is sporting a large hairstyle embellished with bows and flowers. Some of the looks were also accompanied by matching, cascading veils. Each look radiating delicate, feminine energy

The standout looks from the collection are perhaps the ones that vary, if only slightly, from the frocks that blend so well together. A lemon yellow, blush pink, and peach Grecian empire dress draping in chiffon down the body with a cinch at the waist. Another long-sleeved, full-length dress is designed completely of white feathers with accents of neon lime and neon magenta feathers scattered throughout. The final look featured for the collection was a man in white tights and a cream-colored blouse with white feathers lining the sleeve and across the back, almost as if it were picked straight out of a mid-century Shakespearean play.

“The aim of Giambattista Valli’s Haute Couture 20 collection is to invite its viewer to a moment of introspection and to recognise the importance of gestures. The presence of the dancer embodies the idea of an messenger of Olympus who seeks to unveil memories, new emotions and spirits in the soul of the Valli creature,” @giambattistavalliparis wrote on Instagram. The collection certainly does evoke a notion of movement and a retro aesthetic. As the collection was digitally debuted to the world, the garments swished and swayed with every toss and turn of a model.

Layers on layers stack to create these confectionary designs that have become a classic staple for the house’s brand. Valli couture leans into the very full, princessy fantasy that it is known for. The overarchingly tiered, feminine pieces create a cohesive vision and natural progression from Giambattista Valli’s last collection. Overall, the label has created a beautifully romantic couture collection with a ‘60s and ‘70s influence, among some of the biggest decades for dance.
